PVB Testing in Washington, DC

The pressure vacuum breaker, or PVB, is the brass device sticking out of the ground near your sprinkler system with a bonnet on top and two small test cocks. It is the most common backflow preventer on residential irrigation.

A PVB test checks two things. The air inlet has to open when pressure in the body drops to about 1.0 psi. The check valve has to hold at least 1.0 psid in the direction of flow.

The usual failures are a cracked bonnet from a freeze, a stuck poppet, or a check that leaks because the rubber has gone hard after years in the sun. Water spitting out from under the canopy when the system starts is a sign the poppet is not seating.

A PVB must sit at least 12 inches above the highest sprinkler head it serves. If yours is lower, it may not pass inspection even with good readings.

Grizzly Backflow & Plumbing connects Washington, DC homeowners with testers for PVB testing and backflow prevention repairs. Call (833) 990-5874.

Backflow testing FAQs

Questions about backflow testing

Questions we hear most often about PVB Testing in Washington, DC.

Talk to a person
What is the difference between an RPZ and a double check valve?
Both have two independent check valves. An RPZ adds a relief valve between the checks that discharges water to atmosphere if the checks leak, which is why it is required on high-hazard connections.
What does a failed backflow test mean?
A check valve or the relief valve did not hold its required pressure differential. The device needs repair or replacement, then a retest before a passing report can be filed.
What is a cross-connection?
Any point where drinking water piping can come into contact with a non-potable source. Common examples are a hose in a bucket, a boiler fill line and an irrigation system.
Who sends the test report to the water utility?
The tester usually files it, either on the utility's paper form or through its online portal. Ask for a copy for your own records.
How much does backflow testing cost in Washington, DC?
Pricing depends on device type, size and the local market. Call (833) 990-5874 for current pricing on backflow testing in Washington, DC.
